The caste system in India

The caste system in India has been affecting the life of Indians for the last 4000 years. It influenced the political path, the choice of the spouse, the food and other things. The term caste was first used by Portuguese travelers who came to India in the 16th century. Caste comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word "casta" which means "race" or "breed".

In Hinduism four castes exist, arranged in a hierarchy. The mythology says that the castes are created from the body parts of Purusha, the forefather of mankind. His mouth resembles Brahman, his arms Kshatriya, Vaisia embodies the leg and the feet are Sudra. This idea shows that the members of the caste system work together as one body.

The religious word for caste is 'Varna'. Within Varna are specific communities, which are called Jats. The Jats are bestowed with certain expectations and limitations.

From and only through birth, does a Hindu belong to a particular caste! The belief and the caste system are strongly rooted in India. Since Hindus believe in reincarnation they live strictly according to the prescribed rules of their religion. Hindus believe that if you comply with these rules, you are destined to be in a better position in the next life. That means rebirth in a higher caste. If a Hindu violates the prescribed rules, he could be reborn as an animal in the next life. This according to the Hindus faith is a punishment.

Expectations are applied more to the higher Varnas and limitations are applied more to the lower Varnas. Some examples are: specific and strict diets, which person they can marry, what jobs they can administrate, what community they can live in, who they can eat with, and many other regulations. This means that a person born into a lower Varna or Jat could never follow his or her dreams and ascent into a higher social position. Each Varna member has a certain occupation which only he or she can to exercise.

The highest Varna is the Brahman. Members of this class are priests and the educated people of the society, for example teachers. The Varna after them in hierarchy is Kshatriya, the wealthy ruling families, kings and warriors. After that comes the Vaisia. This is the class of the landlords and businessmen. The fourth caste in hierarchy is the Sudra. Members of this class are the peasants and working class of the society, who work in non-polluting jobs. The caste hierarchy ends here. Below these castes are the outcasts who are regarded as untouchable by the four castes. These untouchables live a life of poverty, are discriminated against, and are outsiders in their own home land.

Gandhi fought against the caste system in India. He called the low caste people Harijans or Children of God. Today the democratic government in India has taken many steps to improve the condition of the low caste people. The Government for example reserve jobs for them and encourage marriages between the different castes. Indians also have become more flexible within the caste system. In general the people living in the urban areas are less strict about the caste system than the people in the rural areas. In some Indian cities you can see people from different castes mingling with each other, while in some rural areas there is still discrimination based on castes and sometimes also towards untouchables.

All in all you can say that the caste system in India has a long tradition and the most of the people identify themselves with the caste system, which is why it still exists.

Hallo blomster,
a) The Varna after them in hierarchy is Kshatriya, the wealthy ruling families, kings and warriors.
Mit "after" ist hier eher "below" gemeint. Dann könntest Du kurz schreiben: The Varna below Brahman is named Kshatriya, .....

b) Hier gingen zwei Singular "s" am Verbende verloren:
The Government for example reserves jobs for them and encourages marriages between the different castes.

Sonst prima, würde ich sagen.
Viele Grüße,
Infinit

Hallo blomster, [willkommenvh]

> The caste system in India

> The belief and the caste system [as a part of it]are
> strongly rooted in India. Since Hindus believe in

> Expectations are applied more to the higher Varnas and
> limitations are applied more to the lower Varnas.

Stilistisch nicht schön. Expectations rather concern (the) higher Varnas, whereas limitations are applied to (the) lower Varnas.

> Some

> they can live in, who they can eat with, and many other

Das ist ein Substantiv. Du meinst das Verb, ascend.

> into a higher social position. Each Varna member has
> a certain occupation which only he or she can to exercise.

Mir gefiele "perform" besser als "exercise".

> The highest Varna is the Brahman. Members of this class are
> priests and the educated people of the society, for example
> teachers. The Varna after them in hierarchy

> is Kshatriya,
> the wealthy ruling families, kings and warriors. After that
> comes the Vaisia.

Klingt hier besser im Singular: ...come the Vaisia.

> This is the class of the landlords and
> businessmen. The fourth caste in hierarchy is the Sudra.
> Members of this class are the peasants and working class of
> the society, who work in non-polluting jobs. The caste
> hierarchy ends here. Below these castes are the outcasts

Hierzu siehe oben, am Anfang meines Beitrags.

> Gandhi fought against the caste system in India.

Aus welcher Kaste kam der eigentlich? ;-)

> He called
> the low caste people Harijans or Children of God. Today the
> democratic government in India has taken many steps to
> improve the condition of the low caste people. The
> Government for example reserve jobs for them and encourage
> marriages between the different castes. Indians also have

Hier würde ein Komma nicht schaden.

> the people living in the urban areas are less strict about
> the caste system than the people in the rural areas. In
> some Indian cities you can see people from different castes
> mingling with each other, while in some rural areas there
> is still discrimination based on castes and sometimes also
> towards untouchables.

> All in all you can say that the caste system in India has a
> long tradition and the most of the people identify
> themselves with the caste system,

statt der letzten drei Worte würde "it" vollauf genügen.

> which is why it still
> exists.

Punkt.
